Diabetes Mellitus

What is Diabetes

In 2006 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted resolution 61/225, which recognizes diabetes as a "chronic, debilitating and costly severe complications, and poses severe risks for families, Member States and the world" and designated November 14 as World Diabetes Day. The just ended was the first year that this event was held, and in this context revealed the results of various surveys to ascertain the prevalence and perception of this disease among people of different countries.

One of these surveys, conducted in Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica and Brazil, sponsored by Merck Sharp & Dohme, evaluated knowledge about diabetes, treatments available, its complications and impact of the disease in daily life. For this data, in each country were interviewed a hundred people with diabetes and nondiabetic hundred people, all adults.
In our country, the survey indicated that 67% of respondents knew that diabetics had the disease for more than a year, 60% indicated that this disease is the leading cause of mortality in Mexico while 50% of nondiabetics said Diabetes is a disease that causes higher mortality in the country.

Diabetes is a major health problem in the world, and although risk factors are well identified, the number of cases continues to rise, according to projections, by 2025 the world population suffer from diabetes will add eight billion people.

Smart Insulin

• What: The pancreas releases insulin into our bloodstream, people with diabetes have problems with the production of this hormone, so glucose levels rise and may face serious trouble. Smart Insulin is an inject able drug developed by Smart Cell laboratories to help diabetics control of their glucose levels.

• How it works: Smart Insulin detect when glucose levels are high and automatically releases insulin, which stops flowing after glucose levels return to normal.

This procedure eliminates the need to inject several times a day.

• Progress: So far, experiments have been limited to rodents and pigs, the latter are important because cases of diabetes have similar reactions to those of humans. The tests were positive responses to medication, so that in the next two years will be carried out human clinical trials.

• Effectiveness: Diabetes is a major cause of death worldwide: Although Smart Insulin save many patients, there is still nearly a decade for us to enjoy its benefits.
