Sexual satisfaction would increase with age tells us, the study published in the American Journal of Medicine on January. This was conducted on women having average age of 67 years postmenopausal and mostly, the study shows that the majority of them have had sex in the past month and 62% reach orgasm most of the time. Finally, for those who "no longer practice" emotional and physical closeness with the partner becomes more important than orgasm.
This study of more than 800 sexually active women and older finds in fact that sexual satisfaction in women increases with age and whatever appetite for sex. A majority of participants reported a continuation of orgasms to old age, despite an often lower sexual desire.
Researchers at the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine and the Department of Veterans Affairs rated this sexual activity and satisfaction to 806 elderly women, whose health was followed for medical research over the past forty years. The study measured the prevalence of current sexual activity, the characteristics of this sexual activity, demographics, health status, use of hormones, the excitation frequency, lubrication, orgasm and pain during sexual intercourse, sexual desire and satisfaction.
The median age of these women was 67 years and 63% were postmenopausal. Half of the respondents had been sexually active with a partner over the past 4 weeks.
The real "problem", the lack of desire: 40% of all women say because they never or almost never felt sexual desire, and one third of sexually active women reported low sexual desire. Dr. Elizabeth Barrett-Connor, lead author and chief of the Division of Epidemiology, Department of Family Medicine and Preventive University of California, comments: "Despite a correlation between sexual desire and other areas of sexual function, only 1 woman in 5 sexually active said a high sex drive. about half of women aged 80 years or older reported periods of arousal and orgasm, but rarely report sexual desire. Not only the oldest women in the study say they are the most satisfied overall, but women who have recently been sexually active are experiencing similar levels of satisfaction related to orgasm identical to those of younger participants.
Emotional and physical closeness with the partner may be more important than orgasm: "In this study, sexual activity is not always necessary for sexual satisfaction. Women who were not sexually active have achieved sexual gratification by touching, fondling, or other acts of intimacy developed during a long relationship, "says Dr. Susan Trompeter, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and co-author of the study.
