Alternative Flu Remedies

Last week I thought I had the flu. Actually, I thought I had strep throat, but it was a severe cold, sore throat, and stomach upset. Before the calling of the nurse (I was convinced it was the flu) I sought treatment to fight the flu. Do you have any idea how many there are different products that claim to prevent and treat flu-like symptoms? Tons.
Let me be clear, it is never a good idea of diagnosing illness self (this is what doctors are for.) Nor is it wise to self-treat with a variety of medicines without consulting a doctor first. As I mentioned before, was that I had the flu, but really found some interesting information on ways to avoid getting the flu.

According to doctors, the best way to protect against the flu is to get the vaccine in one shot. However, there have been several recent studies that illustrate the positive aspects of using alternative flu remedies. A study was done by a group of pharmacists who recommend herbal Oscillococcinum as a preventive measure. According to the pharmaceutical, Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic flu remedies that are sold as hot in store shelves. In studies in patients experiencing flu-like symptoms Oscillococcinum helped relieve fever within 24 hours and within 48 hours most patients said they felt much better.
Two other popular alternative remedies for flu are "Throat Defense" and "LifeShield." Studies conducted by the military show they work and are safe. Doctors say: "if you use it every day, this really helps prevent bacterial and viral infections."
Life Shield Throat Defense are both regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, so they are safe and have no known side effects and can be given to children on the two.

However, every study I read came with links to other websites where critics questioned whether the aforementioned remedies, which tend to be expensive, really work. In one report, Dr. Jonathan Snider of Newton-Wellesley Hospital said, "I have seen data, medical research I've seen has not been beneficial in preventing the flu." However, the lower actually admitted that the products can help relieve symptoms and in all likelihood probably would not hurt people, but recommended the flu vaccine as "the only sure fire way to avoid getting the flu."
As a reminder, before taking any herbal remedy, you should agree with your doctor first.
